04 Jun The Healing Power of Music!
“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” ~ Berthold Auerbach
I was inspired to write this particular blog after attending a wonderful concert during the week. There is a part of us all that knows how therapeutic music can be. I often listen to music that will uplift me when I need it, and I will listen to music that will also settle my energies when that is needed.
Scientific research supports what on an innate level we already know, that music can be healing. Findings show that by listening to music, physical pain, stress and anxiety decreases. It also reduces the effects of depression. Listening to music enhances one’s mood, and has cardiovascular benefits also. Playing and writing music is a form of self-expression, allows feelings to be released, and enhances creativity, all of which can provide emotional well-being.
This week – Make listening to music a mindfulness practice… whether it be a formal, seated meditation or not. Just be mindful of the sounds, the way you would be mindful of your breathing. Instead of thinking, worrying, or daydreaming, listen with full attention, and if your mind wanders, gently return your attention to the sounds. Notice how you feel as you listen to music in a mindful way. Take some time to enjoy the healing power of music!
